Methotrexate is an antimetabolite that blocks an enzyme important in DNA synthesis. This slows the rate of cell production and development in tissues, which are growing at an abnormally fast rate. How Methotrexate works in rheumatoid arthritis is not completely understood. It may suppress the immune system, which produces chemicals causing inflammation (eg, swelling, pain, stiffness, warmth) of rheumatoid arthritis.
